St. Michael's Church, Cowthorpe
Oak Road, Wetherby, Cowthorpe, North Yorkshire, LS22 5EZ
Description
Enjoy guided tours at 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday of the 15th Century church of St Michael's, with its Easter Sepulchre, the remains of a memorial brass and superb font, led by local historian Derek Gaunt. The theme will be "Discovering through observation". This will embrace the interpretation of things observable and placing them into an historical context. Bryan Roucliff built St Michael's in 1456-58 and its military looking tower recalls those belligerent times. Mostly Perpendicular, aside from some unobtrusive 19th century restoration and additions, it is clearly and harmoniously of one period. The interest and generosity of the Roucliffs is shown in the treasures of the church: the famous Easter Sepulchre, the remains of a Roucliff memorial, a bell, a superb font and heraldic glass in the windows.
