Nymans, Staplefield Road, Handcross, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH17 6EB
Welcome to Nymans, a National Trust garden and countryside estate. Visit during Heritage Open Days for free entry and a rare opportunity to look behind-the-scenes of the atmospheric ruins of the Messel house with members of the house team. Learn about the rooms that were lost in the fire of 1947 and see areas normally closed to the public. Explore the show rooms which were once occupied by Anne Messel and see inside the seldom open iconic Dovecote. Make the most of your day with a leisurely stroll through the gardens and woodlands. Please be aware that hard hats must be warn inside the ruins - but don't worry, we supply the attractive headwear, no need to bring your own. Children are most welcome to attend this event but must be supervised by an adult, especially when inside the ruins. The Ruins consist of uneven ground and a steep, dimly-lit staircase so we apologise, but buggy access will not be possible. There's always fun things to do at Nymans as a family too! Check out our free pick-up and go activities, try your hand at geocaching and pick up a map to discover the best play areas in the garden.
This event took place in September 2013 and the entry is now archived.
Nymans gardens are accessed via uneven loosely gravelled pathways. Wheelchair and pushchair access is possible but please be aware that not all surfaces are flat or stable. Wheelchair access to the House showrooms is limited (no motorised scooters) but sadly there is no access to the ruins for wheelchairs as there is only stair access. Some areas of the House, ruins and gardens are dimly lit.The ruins containa steep staircase and some dark basement areas. Accessible toilets at the entry to the garden only, no others available within the garden.
Max 50 people per tour/event. Access to the ruins is strictly limited and hard hats must be warn. No bookings available and some queues can be expected (sorry - but it can be very popular), so we beg your patience. That said, you shouldn't have to wait too long, and we've never had to turn anyone away.
Located at the southern end of Handcross High Street, just off the A23 London to Brighton. Map link.
