Take in the atmosphere of the castle dungeon and see where Civil War prisoners carved their names in the solid bedrock walls at our free timed tours. Please be aware access to the dungeon is down steep stone steps. From the castle you can also board the free vintage shuttle bus into town, where you can join one of the fascinating costumed tours of Pontefract Town.

Junction 32 of the M62 Head towards Pontefract town centre. On event days it is recommended that visitors use the town centre car parks. The castle car park is located on Beech Hill, but spaces are limited. There are two disabled persons’ spaces outside the main gates, these cannot be reserved. Please do not approach the castle gates by car (unless you have a disabled badge). The postcode for the castle car park is: WF8 2JF. The visitor centre postcode is: WF8 1QH. Public transport options: Bus routes: 148,149 and 150 (the castle is a six minute walk from the bus stops). The castle is 0.4 miles from Pontefract bus station, Baghill railway station and Monkhill railway station and one mile from Tanshelf railway station. Map link.
