How to use the Event Directory
Our online directory is your comprehensive guide to Heritage Open Days. Constantly updated, it provides you with full details of all property openings and events across England's regions, including late entries, cancellations and last-minute changes.
Heritage Open Days 2007 takes place from 6-9 September, but not all buildings are open on all four days. Some are only open for timed tours and others only by pre-booking. Please check with our online directory when planning your trip.
Finding out what's on in your area
England Map
Heritage Open Days covers eight regions: South West, South East, East of England, East Midlands, West Midlands, North West, North East and Yorkshire. Jersey is the only Channel Island participating in Heritage Open Days.
Click on one of the coloured regions of the map and you will get a list of counties listed under the respective region.
To go back to the England map, click on browse by region on the right sub-menu entitled in this section.
County list
All properties and activities are listed under counties and towns. For reasons of simplicity, we often use old county names, e.g. Berkshire, and place unitary authorities under bigger counties, e.g. Milton Keynes under Buckinghamshire, Telford and Wrekin under Shropshire.
Click on the browse by county option to get a full list of all the counties that take part in the event.
A click on a county name will lead you to the index of the participating towns, cities and villages.
Index for each county
All properties and activities are listed under a city, town or village. Smaller towns, villages or hamlets tend to be listed under a city or bigger town within a ten-mile radius. Please read carefully the directions supplied in most entries.
The town index shows all event titles and property names listed under the towns that take part in a county. For full event details you need to click on the town name or on the link underneath each town paragraph. Cancelled sites and activities will appear in pale grey.
Searching by property name
To search for a specific property or words such as 'church', click on the search option under the tools, tips & info-menu on the right hand side of your screen. There you will find some more tips on how to maximise your search results.
Reading a listing entry
Each listing entry provides you with address details, a short description of the venue or the activity, opening times and directions as well as some more details on admission procedures, amenities and access. Each entry mentions at the end the organisation that has registered the property or event with Heritage Open Days. If applicable, we have set a link to the organisations’ websites.
This year we have started to include photographs of events and properties. We’ll be updating the site each week with new photographs before September so keep visiting.
Directions
Where possible we have set links from individual entries to street maps to help you locate and find your chosen Heritage Open Days venue.
Opening times
Heritage Open Days 2007 takes place between Thursday 6 and Sunday 9 September. For simplicity reasons, the entries only refer to Thu for Thursday, Fri for Friday, Sat for Saturday, Sun for Sunday.
If a property opens outside the official HODs dates, the entry will state this clearly.
Event codes
For a full explanation of the icons used on each list entry, click on the relevant icon or select event codes on the toolbar.
Amendments and cancellations
The information provided in the online event directory is correct at the time of going live. However, with such a large programme of voluntary events, some changes may well occur. Neither the Civic Trust, nor the individual organisers, can accept responsibility for any changes or errors, or any disappointment or inconvenience arising from them.
However, we ask all Heritage Open Days organisers to inform us of any programme changes and withdrawals so that we can keep the event directory up-to-date. Changes can occur at the very last minute, so please double-check details before setting out.
Visitors with special needs
We encourage property owners to make every provision for physical access to their properties. However, not every Heritage Open Days venue has full physical access as many are listed buildings that are not usually open to the public.
The online directory indicates how accessible we have been told the property is (see admission codes under the sub-menu in this section).
If you have a query about disabled access, please contact the Heritage Open Days team on 0870 240 5251 or at hods[@]civictrust.org.uk*
Selecting and printing out your events
You can select a list of events you’d like to attend by clicking on Add to My Events button shown at the bottom of each individual list entry.
Go to my events in the 'in this section' menu to see the full list you have selected.
If you experience any problems, please contact us on 0870 240 5251 or at hods[@]civictrust.org.uk*
