Take 5 with the Team
This week HODs HQ is all about the boxes… parcels of promotional materials going out and huge blue removal crates coming in – it’s a bit like tetris in the attic at the moment! Preparing for an office move is keeping life interesting as we head in to busy, busy time for festival enquiries! So let’s grab a cuppa (the box of tea and tin of biscuits are ringfenced from packing!) find a chair (or sit on a crate), take 5 and catch up…
Partying in the regions
More trains have been a feature this past month taking us to more celebrations around the country. I’ve been lucky enough to head up to beautiful Blackpool and stunning Sheffield to join our wonderful organisers and volunteers. Nothing can be a better reminder of what a great job I have than being in a room with these amazing people who do so much for their local community and the wider heritage sector in the process. Many thanks to Imperial Hotel and Portland Works for hosting the events (definitely worth a visit over the festival!) and to the teams behind the fantastic festival programmes. Also a shout out to the teams in Newcastle, Oswestry and Stoke, I wasn’t able to visit you, but I know Andy had a great time when he went west.
Counting down and adding up!
The countdown to submit events for this year’s festival came to an official close yesterday. Over 1000 events came through in the last week of registration… so we’re going to be a little busy for the next few weeks working through them all for you! Final numbers will be confirmed in September. So do keep checking the directory for more places to visit – and for inspiration check out the Festival Spotlights Catherine and Eleri have been working on, from hidden bank vaults to archaeology experts and Austen connections!
We #DareToDream… of press coverage!
Much excitement in the office last weekend as our Unsung Stories project got a fab piece in The Guardian! A reporter went to one of the training sessions Sarah Corbett has been running to prepare organisers to run their own craftivism workshops over the festival. These thoughtful sessions create beautiful hand stitched clouds to share… and if you’re feeling inspired we have 5 more free packs to give away (we’ll waive the registration deadline for this important project!)
More wiki-ed times ahead with WES
Some of you may know that we’re working with WES (Women’s Engineering Society) this year to help celebrate their centenary. It helps us build further on last year’s work uncovering stories of Extraordinary Women, whilst doing something that is all about People Power – uploading information to Wikipedia, the people’s encyclopaedia (and 5th most popular website in the world!). We’ve just confirmed that we’ll be running another wikithon at the lovely LSE over HODs, and we’ll be speaking about the project at the Women’s History Network Conference in September.
So, it’s August already, what now for the HODs team? Well, for Alex and I it’s all going to be about processing (and moving boxes!). Andy has some exciting things in the pipeline for you all though – watch this space, or most particularly watch our social media channels, for the return of our photography competition, and ‘Win it Wednesday’ on Facebook !
That’s all for this month, see you next time!
