Ring out the bells this Heritage Open Days

Ever wondered who was behind the nostaligic peal of wedding bells? Ever wondered what it would be like to ring one? You can this Heritage Open Days!

Tonight, from 6-7pm, a chorus of bells will ring out across England. The chorus will mark the opening of Heritage Open Days and your 4-day invitation to discover the history of bells, experience demonstrations and even have a go!

And if that hasn't hooked you, may we introduce Georgie Lynch, just one of England's young bell-ringers. Find out how she first became involved and why she would recommend ringing, whoever you are.

Georgie helps ring the changes

Who are you and where are you from?

I'm Georgie, I'm 15 and I ring in Redhill, Surrey.

How long have you been taking part in bell ringing activities?

I started bell ringing in September 2012 so now I've been ringing for almost 4 years.

What made you want to get involved?

My two uncles are both regular ringers in Manchester and Nottingham so when my uncle John came to stay, he visited our church tower and I came along and I was invited to try it out. I really liked my first session as everyone was really friendly, there was another girl the same age as me there and I found the ringing intriguing.

What do you like best about it?

The best bit about ringing for me is probably the social side as you get the opportunity to go to churches to ring all around different counties (I've rung at Southwark cathedral, Bow church and St Clement Danes),meals out, quizzes and young ringers outings just for people my age. Also learning different methods and ringing on different bells is good too as it's challenging and it's something different and new.

What would you say to someone who might want to give it a try?

I would say go for it! Even though ringing for my age group is uncommon that shouldn't put you off from trying it out. Also if you go with a friend it might be more fun as you get to progress and go on outings together.
