The first documented evidence of Meersbrook Hall is from 1759, although it is thought parts of it are older. It was built in approximately seven phases, and includes a period of use (from 1890 – 1953) as the Ruskin Museum.
The Friends of Meersbrook Hall, Heeley Development Trust and the Guild of St George will be offering talks about the Hall.
Visitors will be able to access parts of the Hall to view displays about the history and future of the Hall, artworks by local groups and Sheffield Young Artists and the Ruskin Museum, which will include ephemera once used in the museum. The Curator of the Ruskin Collection will be available to answer questions about the Collection.
The event is the last in the Big Draw/Ruskin in Sheffield programme which celebrates Ruskin’s contribution to encouraging people to take part in artistic activity and will include metal working; creating a well dressing of the view from the top of the park; temporarily recreating the bandstand and drawing in various locations around the park.
There will be a marked route and accompanying map to the Gleadless Commons Fair taking place from 12 noon - 6pm.
The Walled Garden will also be open for refreshments and clay tile painting. Meersbrook Park Users Trust will host talks about the Garden at 1pm and 2.30 pm.
The event is a collaboration between the Friends of Meersbrook Hall, Heeley Development Trust, Ruskin in Sheffield and Meersbrook Park Users Trust.
