36 Lime Street | From Flax to Freelance: The history of 36 Lime Street
36 Lime Street Ltd, Ouseburn Warehouse, 36 Lime Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 2PQ

Join Ouseburn expert Mike Greatbatch and 36 Lime Street glass artist Sue Woolhouse on a tour of the exterior and then interior of 36 Lime Street, along the way explaining what its original use was and a tour of several studios.
We will meet at the main entrance to 36 Lime Street, adjacent to Seven Stories and the large chimney. From there we will walk down together to the bridge over the Ouseburn, down the slipway. Mike will explain why the building was built on the edge of the Ouseburn River, who owned it and its various historical uses. We will talk about Mike Mould who bought the building as derelict in 1983. He was looking for a home for his community theatre 'Bruvvers' and also for people to come in and occupy some spaces over the 5 floors for minimal rent. The long-term nature of the Head Lease is unusual and gives artists security of tenure, allowing them to invest fully into their practice. This investment will be evident when viewing artists workshops.
We will then walk back up to the main entrance and walk up to the top level which is the original roof of the building. As we walk down through all floors, eventually ending up in my studio on the ground floor, we will visit several artists' studios, to see how they have been adapted to different artists' requirements and techniques. We have a wide range of artists, please look at our website.

Visitors can enjoy the grandeur and beauty of the only elliptical church in England, whilst being guided through its history.
There has been a Christian church standing on the site of All Saints on the northern bank of the River Tyne since the twelfth century. The present building, constructed between 1786 and 1796, is an excellent example of 18th-century neoclassical architecture, but it is also a reflection of post-reformation theology in architecture. It was built to the designs of David Stephenson (1756–1819), a local builder and architect, and is where Lord Armstrong (of Cragside fame) was baptised. Come and see the wonderful things this magnificent building has to offer and how lovingly this Grade I listed building has been restored and returned to use as a place where God is worshipped.

Archive Open Day: Buddle at 250 Celebration
The Common Room, Neville Hall, Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 1SE
We are offering the public the rare opportunity to explore our archive collection and gain insight into the fascinating life of John Buddle…
We're opening our doors and displaying highlights from our John Buddle archive collection, to commemorate 250 years since the birth of ‘The King of the Coal Trade’, a central figure of the industrial revolution.
We are offering the public the rare opportunity to explore our archive collection and gain insight into the fascinating life of John Buddle through documents including his handwritten diaries, notebooks and personal papers. The Common Room holds one of the world’s largest, most comprehensive, public collections on mining engineering and the development of the coal industry.
The Common Room is a charity formed in 2017 to restore the Grade II* listed Neville Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne (home to The Mining Institute since 1872). Our internationally recognised archive collection documents centuries of mining history, engineering and scientific innovation.
Thanks to National Lottery players, an £8.9m grant has enabled us to spend over £7 million restoring the building, and around £2m to support our running costs, preserve our collections, and to drive our mission: to use our unique heritage to inspire the next generation of innovators and engineers.

From ships' waste to non-conformist burial ground to children's play area to community green space. Come along and hear about the history of Ballast Hills Park and learn about our plans for the future.
The site was originally formed from ballast unloaded from ships that traded on the River Tyne. Then between the 17th and 19th century, Ballast Hills was a non-conformist cemetery. It's estimated that up to 80,000 people are buried at Ballast Hills. After an 1853 cholera outbreak, Ballast Hills stopped being used as a burial ground but remained open to the public. In 1930 the gravestones were removed and it become a park - as it remains today, nearly 100 years later. You can still see many gravestones laid in the paths, and a select few gravestones, mainly those from religious leaders, are still standing at the edge of what was Ouseburn School, now the i4 Business Centre.

Christ Church is Grade II* listed as a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture. An exhibition of the history of Shieldfield is also being held.
Christ Church was consecrated in 1861. The exterior spire and gargoyles gives an often forbidding appearance. But, the interior surprises and delights the visitor with its blend of space and light. The church stands on the site of a Civil War fort. A plaque on the green opposite commemorates King Charles's visits to "The Shield Field" when a prisoner at Newcastle - he was permitted recreation time here. It is difficult now to imagine the Victorian Shieldfield that Christ Church was built to serve. The church includes a First World War Memorial stained glass window. The church has recently had a number of its leaded windows repaired. You will be able to see an exhibition of photographs of the history of Shieldfield.

Dickensian Newcastle
Meet at The Royal Station Hotel, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 5DH

This walk looks at the Newcastle Charles Dickens would have seen when he visited and with places associated with Dickens.
Many people who were alive at the time of Dickens death would have seen huge changes in their lifetime including the changing face of Newcastle from medieval to Victorian town with the creation of the Grainger and Dobson ‘newtown’..Of course when Dickens came here, Newcastle was simply a large town. City status was not to come until 12 years after Dickens death..
We will largely be walking on the streets that Dickens himself might have walked (we know he frequently walked around the towns he visited to see life which he could later incorporate into his novels). and to add flavour, there are some readings from Dickens.

Great Lives: John Buddle presented by David Kidd

John Buddle's funeral in 1843 was a massive public event reflecting his status as a local celebrity. Join David Kidd in our Lecture Theatre as he reviews Buddle's contribution to mining engineering and the significance of his fascinating career.
Buddle remains a shadowy figure in the background of the Industrial Revolution in the north. The achievements of figures like William Armstrong, and George and Robert Stephenson as inventors and industrialists seem much more tangible and easier to understand than Buddle's work underground.
We are fortunate that as a prolific record keeper and diarist Buddle documented his life and work in great detail, preserved in our archive. The 250th anniversary of his birth is a good time to reassess his life and understand his achievements and his legacy. This talk is a celebration of Buddle's life and the archive of his diaries, which reveal many stories about a period of rapid change and the man at the centre of it.
David Kidd was born in South Shields and studied Economic History at Leicester University. He took a second degree in Mathematics with the Open University and trained as a teacher. He taught mathematics and technology in Britain and Africa before retiring. David now researches, writes and speaks about local history and specialises in the life and times of John Buddle based on Buddle's diaries, and is continually revising and updating his writing about Buddle. He is also Chairman of the Coble and Keelboat Society, a maritime heritage charity.

Join the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery on one of our heritage tours, where we visit some of the final resting places of the famous, and not so famous, men and women who had a creative impact and influence on the North East and beyond.
Newcastle has always been a place of great creativity, contributing so much to the world at large, and our HOD tours this year are a tribute to some of those who did so much to help Newcastle, and the wider North East, to 'punch above its weight', particularly in terms of architecture, arts, industry and invention. So, as we meander through this beautiful garden cemetery, our friendly, experienced tour guides will take you to the graves of John Dobson, Thomas Oliver, Julia Darling, Sid Chaplin, Joseph Wilson, Thomas Miles Richardson, William Rea, Christopher Thomas Maling, the Dodds sisters, Thomas Hall Tweedy and John Philip Robson, to name but a few, where their lives and creative legacies will be explored.
Event Times
- Thursday 14 September: 1100-1300. You are welcome to stay and chat over a cup of tea with the Friends afterwards.
- Saturday 16 September: 1100-1300. You are welcome to stay and chat over a cup of tea with the Friends afterwards.

To book a place, please email us at address below, let us know who wants to come and we’ll confirm your booking and provide you with further details. Contact: Ray Hayes, Secretary, Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery Email: friendsofjoc@gmail.com Booking opens: 19 June 2023 Booking closes: 13 September 2023
Access Information: Jesmond Old Cemetery has little in the way of established footpaths, with it consisting mainly of uneven grassed pathways so, unfortunately, wheelchair users and people who are unsteady on their feet will find the tours a challenge. All attendees are advised to wear stout footwear and to dress appropriately for the weather.
How can people participate? In Person.
Additional information: Max 40 people per tour/event. Event Duration: Tours take approximately two hours.. People have, in the past, got a little mixed up about which cemetery to attend as there are two on Jesmond Road; Jesmond Old Cemetery's high stone walls should be instantly recognisable and are in marked contrast to the open metal railings of the adjacent All Saint's Cemetery, so this should help you find us!! All attendees are asked to meet us at the South Lodge, which is next to the Sandyford Road entrance to Jesmond Old Cemetery. The Friends will all be wearing hi-vis vests, so we will be really easy to recognise.
Directions: Jesmond Old Cemetery is sandwiched between Jesmond Road and Sandyford Road, on the outskirts of Newcastle City Centre. There is no car parking within Jesmond Old Cemetery, so if you are travelling by car, you will need to search for a space in nearby streets. Sandyford Road is well served by buses and there are bus stops on both sides of the road, close to the Sandyford Road entrance to Jesmond Old Cemetery. The nearest Metro Station is 'Jesmond' and is a 8 minute walk to Jesmond Old Cemetery.

Drop into High Bridge Works to learn more about the creative legacy of our site. Home to pioneers since 1767, join a free tour to learn about our Grade II listed building and its varied histories as Watson's Works and Ward’s Printers.
High Bridge Works is located on the site of the original 18th century engineering works. The original works was demolished at the turn of the 20th Century, and architects Cackett & Burns designed the Ward’s Building which stands on the site today. From the late 19th Century to the 1960s the building was the premises of Ward's Printers. The printers published annual directories featuring the names and addresses of thousands of local businesses and establishments. These publications have become ideal historic records for future generations.
In 2021 the building was rebranded to honour the heritage of Watson’s High Bridge Works, which in the late 1800s employed 350 workers and specialised in manufacturing high pressure steam pumps and ships’ pumping machinery.
The site has been a home for engineering and innovation for centuries. And today is home to Newcastle Contemporary Art gallery and studios for artists and creative businesses including painters, film makers, designers, and architects, amongst others.
Pop in to read more about the history of the building in our display on the ground floor. Or to find out more, join one of our free public tours to hear more about the heritage of the site, and how it has changed over the years.

This tour tells the story of Music Hall in Newcastle from its beginnings to the height of its popularity with tales of the performers who sang in these popular places, such as Joe Wilson and Geordie Ridley, and the songs they sang.
In Newcastle, whilst musical soirees at home and concerts at the Assembly Rooms were the mainstay of the upper and middle classes, songs were beginning to emerge in Newcastle, from early folk songs reflecting the life and hardships of the working classes. Later songs began to record sporting events and others reflecting the unique Geordie humour. Prior to the 1850s in the back rooms of public houses customers often provided their own entertainment. Enterprising publicans recognising the potential for increase in business paid for professional entertainers and so the Music Halls were born… embraced by the mass of working class people searching to escape the hardships of everyday living for a few hours.

The Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of Newcastle. The tour explores the history of the building and past occupants.
Led by Newcastle City Guides visitors will enjoy a conducted tour of the building, its contents and gardens. Visitors will hear about the history of our great City and the Kings, Queens, Presidents and Judges who have stayed here.
The present Mansion House was bequeathed to the City in 1953 by the former Lord Mayor Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland. He was born in the City, attended the Royal Grammar School and became a successful ship-owner and philanthropist.
Newcastle was the first town outside of London to build a Mansion House in 1691, reflecting the wealth of the area fuelled by coal.
Following the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835, which introduced votes for the property owning ratepayers in the town, the first Mansion House was abandoned and its contents sold off, because the new electors would not pay for its upkeep. Sadly the Mansion House, which was on the site of the present day Copthorne Hotel, was turned into a warehouse and burnt down in 1891.
The Council in 1837 moved the Mayor to Ellison Place, which became the second Mansion House. Sir Arthur Sutherland, who was brought up in what was to become the third Mansion House, felt the City and the Lord Mayor needed a more prestigious residence and gifted the city his home.
Visitors will have the opportunity for the first time to explore this hidden gem and view its rooms and paintings an experience not to be missed!

St Hilda's Church is a beautiful grade 2 listed building with interior arches and three aisles. The Triptych, painted by Fra Newbery, from the Glasgow School of Art, has been featured in exhibitions north and south of the UK and is featured here
This magnificent Triptych was painted as a war memorial, dedicated to those who lost their lives during the First World War. The middle panel is a wonderful tribute to Christ and the people of the North East. Two end panels showing servicemen from the First World War on one side, and on the other a Roman and a Norman. When the side panels are closed, we see a painting of Mary on one side, and on the other the Archangel Gabriel.

St Matthew’s Church
St Matthew's Church, 11 Summerhill St, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE4 6EJ

One of the finest Grade II* listed Victorian churches in the North East. Designed by R J Johnson, it is the crowning glory of the architect's work, containing his memorial reredos and some fine Kempe windows.
An unusual square-shaped church hidden amongst houses, the battlements and pinnacles of the tower are an important feature of the city skyline. Built between 1878 and 1905 the architect's loyalty to the catholic renewal of the Church of England can be seen in the decorative pillars around the sanctuary and the wide aisle suitable for large processions.
Five windows by George Eamer Kempe include the large East window which features a genealogy of Christ. There are also windows featuring Northumbrian saints.
The decorative font cover came from the now demolished St Cuthbert's Church, Melbourne St. The fittings in the sanctuary, including the reredos, were made by Hicks and Charlewood to Johnson's designs in memory of the architect and were given by his family. Between the choir stalls, there is a memorial to Fr Daunt, the first vicar who died suddenly in 1883. The stonework around the chancel including the pulpit and gates was installed in memory of Fr Churchyard, the second vicar, who died in 1905.

Gosforth Parish Church of St Nicholas (a Grade II listed building) has witnessed the story of over 800 years of life in north Newcastle.
Guided tours at 11:00 & 14:00 will uncover the lives of some of the people who lived, worked, and are buried here.
Drop-in archive handling sessions throughout the day will show some of the plans for our beautiful stained glass windows, original deeds and other historical documents dating back to the 19th century.
Our ancient churchyard tells the stories of lives both long lived and cut short: interesting figures include notable locals such as the Brandling family, Job Bullman and Thomas Hedley as well as Henrietta Vansittart, Victorian inventor of the screw propellor, plus many Commonwealth War Graves. Enjoy a tour of the churchyard or simply spend some time soaking up the wonderful natural world of our 5 acre site.

The exhibition on the Town Moor was one of the greatest shows ever to take place in the region. It showcased local trade and commerce in great "palaces" and pavilions built in concrete and steel, providing amazing entertainment for over four million visitors in six months. This talk tells the story of how the exhibition came to be and of the main exhibits and exhibitors, and it draws brief comparisons with the 1990 Gateshead Garden Festival and the 2018 Exhibition of the North.

Compare and contrast Ouseburn's green spaces then and now in a rare archival exhibition. Explore the path from industrial quarter to conservation area across the 20th century, then take a stroll to solve the clues in our trail book.
For Heritage Open Days 2023, Ouseburn Trust would like to welcome you to an exhibition of rarely-glimpsed images from the our archive. The exhibition will directly compare images taken from the same point of view during the early days of the 1900s up to now, showing the radical transformation of the area's natural environments across time.
Historically, the Ouseburn Valley was the cradle of the industrial revolution in Newcastle: coal was brought to the Tyne along the Victoria Tunnel, and clusters of glass, lead, iron, soap and lime factories crowded beneath a series of rail routes beside mills and potteries. By the middle of the 20th century, the area had fallen into dereliction, and was heavily marked by the intensity of industrial activity. Today, however, it is part of a wildlife corridor and an area of notable ecological value.
Come and explore the shifting landscape and environmental heritage of the Ouseburn Valley, including:
- The original grand plans for City Stadium that led to its name, now a mellow green space well-used by local residents.
- The former Quayside Branch railway cutting, now a precious wild habitat.
- The construction of the Ouseburn Culvert, now home to a bandstand and meadow at its entrance.
- Views of Victorian terraces and industrial buildings, now places where people meet and animals graze.
Then set off to explore the green spaces for yourself with our trail book, and see if you can follow all the clues to make it all the way around!

Join us for a tour and discussion of a very special grand country house in the City, which appears dull from Westgate Road but is quite different from a hidden courtyard and has a surprising interior.
Visit 55 Westgate Road and discover the history of the city's oldest arts building that stands on the line of Hadrian's Wall which was built as the boundary of the Roman Empire, it stood within the City Walls that for centuries defended Newcastle as an outpost of the English Monarchy.
As a Mansion House, it was the centre of civic power in the 1680s and became the City's 1st Assembly House, and later an important home. Featured as 'Assembly House' on the 'Corbridge Map' of 1723. The celebrated Newcastle composer Charles Avison gave his first public subscription concert here in 1735.
The building now stands as modernised in 1775 with the interior awaiting a full restoration. It is run by Newcastle Arts Centre Trust as an occasional events venue and film set. A project to fully restore this treasure is planned.

For Heritage Open Days 2023, Ouseburn Trust would like to welcome you to free guided taster tours of the Victoria Tunnel.
The Victoria Tunnel is a preserved 19th century waggonway, running under the city of Newcastle from the Town Moor to the Tyne. Originally built in 1838 by engineer William Gillespie to to transport coal from Spital Tongues Colliery to the river, the Tunnel was converted in 1939 into an air raid shelter to protect thousands of Newcastle citizens during World War II -- but was then sealed up and left forgotten for 60 years. In 2008 the Victoria Tunnel was carefully repaired and opened for guided tours with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, led by the Ouseburn Trust's award winning volunteer guides.
Tours will last around 20 minutes, with a chance to see the bowels of the city for yourself. Learn what life was like for the clay-kickers who built the tunnel, listen out for the rumble of distant coal waggons, and marvel at a creative yet hidden feat of Victorian engineering.
