St Peter and St Paul Church, Scarning
St Peter and St Paul Church, Dereham Road, Scarning, Dereham, Norfolk, NR19 2PF
The oldest part of the church is thought to date from the 13th century. The south wall contains some intriguing fragments of 'barley twist' stone which might have been recycled from an earlier building.
Features include a massive 13th century stone font with ornate cover, a very wide nave, a delicate chancel screen and a gloriously vibrant east window. Visitors will be able to visit the belfry to see the fine set of bells.
On the evening of 2 January 1945, an RAF Mosquito took off from Swanton Morley and crashed a few minutes later in a field at Broadway Farm, Scarning. Three local men risked their own lives to pull the crew from the wreckage as ammunition exploded all around them. The three heroes were James Andrews, Herbert Farrow and Walter Ward. They each received the British Empire Medal in recognition of their bravery.
The pilot of the Mosquito was Harry White and the navigator was Michael Allen. Both men were exceptional and were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross three times.
The display will tell the story of the rescue and feature memorabilia relating to the Mosquito, the crew and their mission.
Light refreshments will be available. There will be a quiz for children.
