  • In person

Visit the forgotten burial place of Victorian anti-slavery campaigner Mary Ann Rawson. Once part of an elaborate complex of community buildings the site was abandoned for twenty years until was saved from sale and re-development by volunteers.

Volunteers from Friends of Zion Graveyard Attercliffe will be giving hourly talks about the history of this hidden gem. With a story that dates back to 1661 this tiny space holds a big history. During the past seven years, the site has been transformed from an overgrown wasteland to a wildlife sanctuary, every grave uncovered has been researched and archives investigated. A fascinating history has been revealed throwing light on the aspirations of the Zion Congregation Church community. We are also celebrating the Bicentenary of the Sheffield Ladies Anti-Slavery Society of which Mary Anne Rawson and her mother Elizabeth Read, both buried in Zion Graveyard, were founders and there will be a supplementary talk about this.
