1000 Faces
Blenkin Memorial Hall, 1 Wormgate, Boston, Lincolnshire, PE21 6NP
As part of Boston Borough Council’s transformational redevelopment of the Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre and wider Rowley Road area, a new public realm plaza is being created that will link the leisure centre to the Boston College Mayflower development.
Included in the creation of the welcoming and vibrant public plaza space is 1000 Faces—a community-led art project that invites local people to leave their mark on the town, one portrait at a time. Transported are working with Lincolnshire artists Emma and Guiseppe Belli to create 1000 small-scale contemporary portraits and are inviting people of all ages to sculpt their own miniature portrait.
The project draws inspiration from the tiny, expressive carved faces hidden in the choir stalls of St Botolph’s Church (The Stump)—thumb-sized portraits of real medieval Bostonians who have quietly observed the town’s life for more than 600 years. 1000 Faces will become a permanent artistic feature of the new plaza—bringing a sense of place, belonging, and community pride to the centre of Boston. Just as the carved faces of St Botolph’s have watched over the town for centuries, these contemporary portraits will form a modern chorus—telling the story of who we are now.
