140 Years of Innovation, Craft and Community
60 East St. Helen Street, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, OX14 5EB
For 140 years, WWA (West Waddy Archadia) has been part of Abingdon’s evolving story, designing homes, schools, public buildings, and community spaces that reflect changing needs and values. Founded in 1885 by J.G.T. West, the practice evolved over three generations of the West family before entering a new chapter through partnership with Philip Waddy. In 2021, a merger with London-based Archadia Architects brought new expertise and shared values, forming the practice known today as WWA. Over the decades, WWA’s work has ranged from restoring almshouses and chapels to delivering medical centres, sustainable homes, and large-scale masterplans across the South East. The firm has continually adapted, embracing planning, urban design, conservation, and sustainability as central to its work. Today, it remains deeply rooted in the town where it began, operating from a historic former malthouse on East St Helen Street. Once a dyehouse for Abingdon Abbey, the building was later remodelled by architect Harry Redfern and converted to offices for WWA by former partner Philip Waddy. More than just an office, The Malthouse reflects the practice’s enduring values: respect for heritage, thoughtful design, and a commitment to shaping places that serve both people and community.
