Substantial Georgian Sea Captain’s house open for the first time. Including: 14 brick dog kennels built by Plunketts the vets The secret staircase - uncovered in 2024 behind a cupboard! WW11 reinforcements to the basement as an air-raid shelter

154 High Street is a substantial former Sea Captain’s house, largely built during the Georgian period, with an Edwardian extension. There is a significant amount of original period detailing, including panelling, fireplaces and an impressive main staircase. A smaller staircase was recently discovered behind a cupboard and still has remnants of Regency wallpaper.

The building is perhaps best known as the former home of the vet Plunkett’s. Still remaining in the extensive garden are the solid brick-built dog kennels where canine visitors would spend the night.

In the basement, there are substantial metal columns which were installed at some point in the 1940s in order to support the house, and to protect the local community who sheltered here at times of enemy bombing.

On the second floor, you can see vintage 1980s ‘power-ranger’ wallpaper for a child’s room.
