190 year old Victorian church and The Sir Ken Dodd Happiness Hall for Church and Community.

Welcome to St John's Church in Knotty Ash, a place where history, heritage and community come together. Built during the Victorian era the church stands as a proud reminder of 19th century craftsmanship and faith, with its distinct architecture, rich textures and timeless atmosphere offering a glimpse into Liverpool's past. Tours to our crypt are a must if you don't mind viewing ancient coffins. The workings of our Cunliffe Clock are a wonder to behold. refreshments will be available in our lovely Church Hall.
The area is famously associated with local legend Ken Dodd whose humour and story telling brought joy to generations. His beloved Diddy Men remain an enduring symbol of the community's character - playful, imaginative and proudly unique. Today St John's celebrates its Victorian heritage and its connection to this cherished local legacy.

Our Church Hall was once the schoolhouse where Ken Dodd attended and school books and photographs will be available for viewing. People from all over the world once attended this school.

There is parking on the road outside the church and there is parking on site at the church hall opposite.

There are a number of steps down to the crypt so these tours unfortunately would not be suitable for wheelchair users and some disabled persons.
