4000 Miles To Home. A tale from Punjab to Yorkshire

Akbal Singh Kang arrived in Britain aged 11 in 1961, following his father, Sarwan Singh, who had made the journey in the 1950s. Throughout his life, Akbal documented his family and wider community, creating a rich visual record of their experiences.

This illustrated talk and presentation draws on Akbal’s photographs from the 1960s alongside archive material from the 1950s, revealing a vibrant, ambitious and thriving community establishing new lives in Yorkshire.

The images explore education, professional achievement and the influence of Bradford’s industries, with glimpses into mill and working life experienced by this generation of migrants. Together, they tell a story of resilience, personal growth and belonging, and of a community whose journey helped shape Bradford.

Following the talk (Friday 18th September at 7.00pm), visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 4000 Miles To Home exhibition and see the photographs and archive material for themselves. The exhibition will be available from Monday 14th September to Friday 18th September to drop in and visit.
