An ordinary terraced house, transformed by the Glaswegian architect, artist and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, for patron WJ Bassett-Lowke, a local businessman and model engineer. The only house in England with Mackintosh interiors.

Commissioned in 1916 by Mr and Mrs Bassett-Lowke for their marital home, Mackintosh turned this Georgian house into a spectacular example of Moderne design. Bassett-Lowke was the founder of a properous model-making business and was recognised as one of Mackintosh's most demanding and progressive patrons. Famous for his earlier works, including The Glasgow School of Art and Mackintosh at the Willow Tea Rooms, Mackintosh truly altered interior design concepts of the time and this house on the edge of the Cultural Quarter displays his remarkable vision across 4 floors. In 2023, a glass-sided, two-storey extension was added to the rear of 82 Derngate which allowed greater space in the shop and reception and included a mezzanine level gallery area which affords a super view of the gardens below. Visitors will be guided through the house on the Heritage Open Day Tours and will learn a lot about both men and the history of the time. With Galleries, Shop, Gardens and an on site Restaurant, this unique visitor attraction is the perfect place to spend a few hours whilst in Northampton and, according to Eric Knowles, "is a hidden gem in a jewel of a town."
