“It’s Wings Are Almost Free” part of “Everything is Connected” Methodist Modern Art Collection Trail
South Square, Thornton Road, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD13 3LD
As part of Bradford’s City of Culture 2025 celebrations, five venues in the Methodist Church’s Yorkshire West District are exhibiting artworks held in the Methodist Modern Art Collection (MMAC), enabling conversations around faith, hidden or overlooked histories, and diverse and marginalised heritage.
South Square Centre are pleased to host “It’s Wings Are Almost Free” exhibiting four artworks from the Methodist Modern Art Collection by women. This exhibition illustrates the role women played in the resurgence of interest in religious art in post-war Britain, considering why some women artists are better known today, than others. The paintings are testament to the impact of women artists and the MMAC’s far-sighted acquisition of such works early in its collecting. Central to the exhibition is a dialogue with the legacy of the Brontë sisters, born in Thornton near South Square. These literary pioneers serve as a powerful lens for examining the challenges and achievements of “strong, creative” women, both in the arts and beyond.
Artist Zoë Maxwell will be hosting a special still life drawing class inspired by Eularia Clarke’s “Feeding of the Five Thousand” 10.00-12.00 whilst Artists in Residence Becky Cherriman and Imogen Joyce will be looking for visitors responses to the collection to feed into a mixed-media collective artwork which will be developed through conversations with visitors 11.00-15.00
