The historic church of St. Peter & St. Paul at Dymchurch, Romney Marsh
Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, New Hall Close, Dymchurch, Romney Marsh, Kent, TN29 0LD
St. Peter and St. Paul's Church sits at the heart of a vibrant seaside village which has many interesting attractions, including a heritage trail and a beach. A church has existed at Dymchurch since Saxon times and over 900 years of history can be traced through its features, which include beautiful Norman zigzag mouldings and medieval scratch dials.
The village has strong associations with smuggling, which was once rife on Romney Marsh. The church inspired Russell Thorndike to create fictional character Dr. Syn, who by day was the beloved Vicar of Dymchurch but by night was feared smuggler, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh!
Especially for Heritage Open Days, volunteers will be on-hand to show visitors around the church on Friday 12th September and Friday 19th September from 10am-3pm.
The church is open 10am-3pm on all days during the Heritage Open Days period except 20th September (note there is a Holy Communion Service on 14th at 10:30am).
The Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust helps care for 14 medieval churches on Romney Marsh. It offers free audio-visual guides via its website and the app Izi Travel.
Each church also hosts one of The Marsh Mosaics, created by local people to celebrate the history and wildlife of Romney Marsh. Further details can be found on the Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust website. There is a talk about The Marsh Mosaics on 18th September at 11:30am, at the nearby church of St. Nicholas' in New Romney, where guide booklets are available.
