A tranquil rural setting dating back to 1146 and the Knights Templar, with 17th century endowments for church, almshouses and a school by the granddaughters of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. The history of Temple Balsall is focused on the Old Hall which was the headquarters for the Knights Templar from the 12th Century and The Church of St Mary the Virgin, built in the first 30 years of the 14th century by the Knights Hospitallers, who succeeded the Templars.
The church was restored in the 19th century by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The composer of 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary' is buried in the nearby cemetery.
