A Common Treasury
St Mary's church, Cleeton St Mary, Kidderminster, Shropshire, DY14 0QU
Learn about how people in this area sustainably managed the landscape to survive in this sometimes harsh environment. With the coming of industry to Clee Hill, large numbers of workers came to make this home. To claim a plot of land, they had to make their houses themselves overnight using whatever there was to hand. By dawn, if there was a fire in the hearth, they claimed the land to live on and farm. Help us design our house in a night by making your own scale model from the same materials.
Our recent research has uncovered much of this history as well as how the hill has provided raw materials from its mines, quarries, clay pits and woodlands. The church opens directly onto the common where a newly devised walk will allow you to explore key features of this landscape.
Refreshments will be available in the church. Note: there are currently no toilet facilities on site.
