A Guided Tour of Romsey Abbey
Church Lane, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 8EP
Since its foundation as a Benedictine nunnery in Anglo-Saxon times, Romsey Abbey has witnessed the complete history of England. The magnificent 13th century Romanesque architecture survived the Reformation and the building has been a working parish church for over 900 years. The links to royalty and many connections to the history of the Romsey and the Hampshire area make it a fascinating place to visit.
There are so many items of interest, from a very rare and nationally significant rood dating from about AD 1000 to a stained glass window commemorating Florence Nightingale that was installed in 2020.
The tours will include a visit to the ringing chamber in the tower. It should be noted that access to the ringing chamber is via a narrow spiral staircase of approximately 120 uneven steps.
