A Guildhall - a Church and a Gatehouse
Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh, Suffolk, IP7 5DN
The Guildhall- a renowned group of late 15th century buildings have centuries of construction and change within the timber framed walls. There is also a detached kitchen, part of which can still be seen today.
St Mary’s church is one of the large, principal Wool Churches that was built of flint and stone. A magnificent medieval wood and lead spire above the bell tower is the only one of its kind in the county.
The magnificent Gate House was built for the Rector William Pykenham in the mid 15th century. We believe to serve as an imposing gate way to a fine new rectory, though this was never realised. Built of early handmade bricks the tower has many decorative features. The life and times of these buildings have hidden stories of their preservation, alteration and the changing ways in which they have been used.
