Starting from the car park of Northchurch Social Centre in Bell Lane , we consider Northchurch's role in the Civil War and the rise and persecution of the Quakers, before moving on to the site of the first Baptist Chapel and burial ground. Discover more of the stories of key figures in the Victorian era when non-conformity was on the increase, but still largely the religion of the poor.

Non-Conformity in the Berkhamsted area was particularly strong. Baptists were in evidence in the villages and many were imprisoned for clandestine worship. Although Methodists and Congregationalists have dwindled in numbers Baptists remain strong today.
