  • 20 Sep 2025
  • In person

The history of the Arts Centre site goes back to the building of Hadrian’s Wall and a Milecastle Courtyard that is still in use. The fascinating story of this political, mercantile and cultural powerhouse is told on a guided tour.

Set between the lines of the Roman and City Walls this location is at the heart of the City’s cultural past and current arts development. It is a carefully restored group of buildings on Roman foundations, which through centuries of development can be traced involving the lives of people that dominated Tyneside. Today the Arts Centre is a meeting place for over 60 groups and organisations and hosts more than a thousand events each year. Visitors will be shown part of a Roman Milecastle and told the story of how this site developed over centuries, and the future plan of a new Cultural Zone for the west end of the City.
