A Trio of Bridges - Exhibition

The Straw Yard, Parade, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 1DF

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

An iconic feature of Berwick is its three bridges over the River Tweed . Find out about their history through the archives and see the artwork created by local people inspired by the Old Bridge as part of the Bridge 400 Project.

Annie Lord as part of her Bridge 400 Residency explored the original Old Bridge account books which recorded the names, wages and job titles of everyone involved in the construction of Berwick Bridge. Dating back to 1611, these beautifully scribed books tell a fascinating story, revealing both the material history of the bridge, and the labour involved in its creation. During her residency, Annie developed handmade paint, made from the same sandstone used to repair the bridge . Inspired by the workers who initially constructed the bridge, Annie invited local people to contribute an artwork in their honour, using this paint. These artworks, as well as Annie’s own work, will be on display as part of the exhibition.

The Royal Border Bridge, opened in August 1850 as the last link in the railway line between London and Edinburgh, celebrates its 175th birthday this year. Come and find out more about its construction and opening by Queen Victoria.

The Royal Tweed Bridge was opened in 1928 by Edward Prince of Wales. Still used as the main vehicular route in and out of Berwick, the exhibition will look at its construction and the opening ceremony.
