A guided tour of Berkhamsted's historic town centre, pointing out strategic places and buildings of interest.

Starting by the main gateway of the Castle, the oldest building, we shall make our way towards the High Street pointing out significant buildings and events as we cross the canal and make our way down Castle Street into the High Street where there is much to see. We shall not spend long at buildings that feature in other Heritage Open Days with their own guided tour. We shall return via Mills Street and the site of the Saxon Mill.

Accessibility details

There is some walking on uneven ground, narrow pavements and cobbled lanes. Stout shoes are recommended. Tour will take place regardless of weather conditions. There are a number of public car parks close by. Part of the walk takes place along narrow pavements and down the High Street where there will be shoppers and other pedestrians.

There are some cobbled streets and standing around. It is always possible to leave the tour at any point. The tour is not suitable for children under 8. Part of the tour takes place on narrow pavements so care must be taken. Streets will be busy with shoppers and other pedestrians. Stout walking shoes are recommended. There is parking in the town and plenty of cafes to obtain refreshments after the tour has ended.
