A Walk into the Past: Berkhamsted Place, Successor to the Castle

Berkhamsted Place was built by Sir Edward Carey, Keeper of the Queen's Jewels (Elizabeth I), using material from the castle. From the 18th century onwards it was frequently known as The Castle. Although little remains of the mansion itself, the area is rich in history. Tours will include the Great Barn which is even older than the mansion. Although the mansion was demolished in 1967 much interest still remains. There will be a small exhibition depicting the history of The Place.

Accessibility details

There are some slopes, steps and uneven ground. Stout shoes are recommended.There are periods of standing. Parking is available nearby at the top of Castle Hill and at the top of Murrey Road both of which are residential roads and so visitors should be mindful of this. Parking is available in the multi storey car park on Lower Kings Road.which is a 15 minute walk away.
