This walking tour of Alnwick’s lost pubs will show the visitor the location of Alnwick’s lost Beer Houses, Taverns and Inns.

Market towns have always enjoyed a rich choice of inns and taverns, and Alnwick is no exception. The number of pubs and beerhouses increased rapidly following the Beer Act of 1830 and by 1860 it had peaked at around 60. As housing conditions improved, and alternative forms of leisure were introduced, the number fell. Join this walk to learn more about the fascinating story of Alnwick pubs, and how they adapted to changing tastes over the years.

Accessibility details

We recommend using long-stay parking in Greenwell Road or Howling Lane. Everyone is welcome on the walks, no matter their age, but those under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by an adult. The walk is pushchair friendly. Assistance may be available if we are notified of your requirements in advance. The weather can be changeable and Alnwick is a historic town with narrow and uneven pavements that add to its character. So appropriate clothing and footwear is recommended. You may want to take a bottle of water and an umbrella.
