This online event spotlights Adowa dance and showcases the artistic beauty of traditional Ghanaian culture, exploring the under-represented history and meaning behind it.
Adowa is a traditional dance of the Akan people, particularly the Ashanti, often performed during funerals and social ceremonies. Its movements are deeply symbolic, conveying emotion, storytelling, and communal values through rhythm and gesture.
This event will explore the origins of Adowa, its spiritual and cultural significance, and the messages expressed through specific movements and drum rhythms. By doing this, I aim to educate the audience about the ways dance serves as a vessel of history, identity, and resistance, especially within African traditions that have often been marginalized in mainstream historical narratives.
The event will spotlight African heritage from an insider's perspective and challenge the lack of representation of indigenous African performing arts in academic and cultural spaces.
