African Footsteps
St Nicholas Cathedral (Cafe 16 in Cathedral Hall, adjacent to and within the Cathedral), St Nicholas Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 1PF
This short, accessible walk celebrates those Africans who quietly contributed to the well-being of Newcastle: William Fifefield who steered a ferry across the Tyne, John Roach who fed the working people. Both were fondly remembered at the time as was the Nigerian couple who held the 'Wedding of the Year' in 1950.
In celebrating ordinary lives as we journey through Newcastle churches and streets we recognise both how much we share and how much African lives and diversity is embedded in our city's history and heritage.
This taster walk, enriched by readings and pictures, with links to online resources and further walks, provides historical accuracy and encourages a deeper understanding of the people and places of our region.

- A member of the project team will be in the main entrance of St Nicholas Cathedral to direct you to Cafe 16 within the Cathedral Hall. At Cafe 16 you will be welcomed and provided with an introduction to the walk. Refreshments will be on sale in Cafe 16.

Accessibility details
Cafe 16 in Cathedral Hall is accessed through the main Cathedral access via stairs and a lift. Cafe 16 in the Cathedral Hall can be accessed directly, without stairs through the East entrance at the back of the Cathedral. Audio equipment can be provided for groups over 5 people. Families with children can be accommodated with a shorter child friendly walk.
Additional information
Tours will take place on the hour. Please arrive ten minutes before the hour so that the tour can leave on time. Online resources will be available for 15 minutes preceding each hour.
