Discover how the changing coastline has shaped the town and explore its development as a seaside resort, an artists and musicians retreat and learn about the Moot Hall, a Tudor building still in use today for local governance. Step inside this unique Timber Framed building, that was also the town jail.
Our collection provides a unique insight into the lives of the people of Aldeburgh; from Anglo-Saxons to Victorians, including the infamous medieval witch trials. Discover Aldeburgh’s famous people, such as the first female Doctor, surgeon and mayor in Britain, Elizabeth Garrett-Anderson, the Poet George Crabbe and the Composer Benjamin Britten. Of national significance are artefacts from the country's first discovered Anglo-Saxon ship burial.
Choose one of four self-guided walks around the town and find out about some of Aldeburgh's unique buildings with 'Aldeburgh on Foot'. Available to purchase from the museum shop.
For children: dress like a Mayor and sit on the Mayoral throne, have a go at our museum discovery trail or take a walk with Aldeburgh's famous dog, Snooks.
The museum collection is in the first floor council chamber and the museum room on the ground floor. Entry to the museum is via the external staircase directly into the Council Chamber. Suitable for all ages.

Not accessible to visitors with limited mobility as there are steps to access the museum both inside and outside. The nearest public toilets are 100m between the sea and the Moot Hall.
