All Saints Parish Church, St Ives

All Saints Church, St Ives, is a Grade 1 listed parish church with traces of an earlier building and a Norman Romanesque font. The church has a Kempe stained glass window. It is featured in Simon Jenkins 'England's Thousand Best Churches' as having a 'Theatrical Comper interior' and a 'steeple, high, elegant and with a gracefully tapering spire'.

On an evening in March 1918 a De Havilland DH6 took off from Hemingford Meadow and crashed into the spire. The top of the spire was hit and collapsed into the north aisle, and the aircraft fell into the south aisle causing serious damage to the church roof and interior. Sadly the pilot lost his life. It was not until 1920 that services were held in the church again and 1924 before the spire was rebuilt. The bells were not rehung and in use until 1930. This was the fifth time that the spire had been rebuilt or repaired.

A display of various artefacts will be on view, as well as the NADFAS (The Arts Society) Church Record books.

Directions:

The Spire of the Parish Church is clearly visible as you walk out of the centre of St Ives with the river Great Ouse on your left. The path behind the church takes you to the west door for wheelchair and easy access. As you enter the churchyard on the riverside, take the right hand path to the front access which has steps. Parking space is minimal, but if you are approaching St Ives from the west side, (Huntingdon) Church Street is the first turning on the left of Westwood Road.

Access for wheelchair users is by the west door, which is near the white wooden bridge to Holt Island Nature Reserve.
