Ancient White Willows - a unique living heritage

The illustrated talk, by environmental historian Professor Ian Rotherham, will look at the rich heritage of the veteran white willows found in the area. It will explore the unique place these veteran trees hold in the history of the local landscape and the rich biodiversity which they support. For example, the results from preliminary survey work indicate a high score on the Saproxylic Quality Index more commonly found in areas such as Sherwood Forest. Ian will talk about the proposed Biosphere Reserve and the adoption of the White willows as an iconic species bridging the areas between National Nature Reserves and the urban centres. He will also discuss the need for appropriate management of the trees based on their history, and the need to create their successors so that the trees continue to be part of the local landscape and its unique heritage.
