Who are the architects who left their mark on Alnwick? What is their story? And where can their work be seen today?

When architecture first emerged as a profession in the 18th century, the big names were based in London. By the 19th century, the coal trade and industrialisation were bringing economic prosperity to our region. Far from London, a network of north-east architects emerged and flourished.

Tastes have changed: from the neoclassical architecture of the Georgian period, through the Victorian Gothic revival, to today’s emphasis on sustainability. However, clients have always sought the best available advice. Patrons have long nurtured local talent. The result is that, for 300 years, some very different architects have left their mark on Alnwick. Discover more about their lives, and see where their work still forms part of the built fabric of our town.
