As part of the Made in Buxton project, local historian Trevor Gilman shares his expert knowledge of the area’s industrial and craft heritage.

Post-war Britain was re-built in a hurry resulting in buildings often devoid of any unnecessary ornamentation or details. By the 1970s there was an appetite for change. This demand was met By Dorothea Restoration Engineers Limited from their offices in South Street and later Spring Gardens. They made ornamental metalwork to embellish new and refurbished buildings, streets and public parks. They were so successful that in 1980 they split into several firms, specialising in various aspects, including street furniture, canopies and bandstands, machinery restoration and signage. Leander Architectural at Dove Holes is just one of these firms still in existence.
