Arrivals: Coventry’s Living Memories shares the filmed memories of Coventry residents whose journeys were shaped by Partition, war, displacement and migration.

Through specially recorded interviews, contributors will share personal memories connected with events including the 1947 Independence and Partition of India, the division of Punjab and Bengal, the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, migration from East Africa and other experiences of displacement and migration.

Rather than concentrating only on political events and dates, the project explores the everyday human stories behind them: childhood and family life, leaving home, arriving in Britain, finding work and somewhere to live, language and cultural differences, friendship and prejudice, maintaining traditions, raising families and gradually making Coventry home.

The free Heritage Open Days event will include a screening of selected filmed interviews followed by an informal discussion. Visitors will also be encouraged to share their own family memories and suggest other Coventry residents whose experiences should be recorded.

The project is intended as the beginning of a longer-term digital archive preserving Coventry’s migration memories for future generations.
