A self-guided audio tour of Birkenhead, exploring the shipbuilders, dockers and ferry workers of the Mersey.

Follow a self-guided audio walk through Birkenhead, using headphones and the route in the app as you make your way from Birkenhead Priory to the shipyard gate at Cammell Laird, then back through the town centre and waterfront.

The tour has 15 stops and runs to about 1 hour of audio, or around 3 hours in total with walking. Along the way you pass Priory Street, Hamilton Square, the Town Hall, the market, the former tramway route, the tunnel memorial, Woodside, Egerton Dock and the transport museum. This Birkenhead version focuses on the ordinary working lives that shaped the place: monks running the ferry crossing, navvies digging docks, shipwrights hammering iron hulls, dockers handling grain, early tramway pioneers, tunnel grafters and unemployed men who organised against the Means Test. It is a walk through streets and buildings that still carry those histories in plain view.
