A self-guided audio tour of Blackpool, exploring the staff who keep the resort running: landladies, theatre workers, tram drivers and pier hands.

Follow a self-guided route through Blackpool with headphones and the app as you walk from stop to stop, starting at the Comedy Carpet and ending on Charnley Road. There are 9 stops and about 1 hour of audio, or around 1.5 hour in total including the walking. Along the way, you hear the town as it was worked as well as watched: the first electric street trams, the Tower’s brickwork and illuminations, the North Pier and promenade at daybreak, the Grand Theatre and Winter Gardens, and the boarding houses that filled with seasonal workers and holidaymakers alike. This Blackpool version is shaped by the people usually left out of the postcard view — steeplejacks, ballroom organists, pier keepers, landladies, electricians and showmen — and by the places where their labour shows up in the streets today. It is a walk through the resort’s visible landmarks, but the story comes from the names, jobs and routines that kept them running from 1863 to the present day.
