AudaTours Brighton Audio Tour: Below the Promenade
King's Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 2LN
This self-guided audio walk has 17 stops and takes about 2 hours of audio, or around 3 hours in total once you follow the route between sites. Start at Brighton Station and listen on your headphones as you walk through a city where the visible pleasure frontage sits on top of hidden labour: railway sheds and footplates, kitchen corridors and service stairs, basements, back entrances, piers and shingle. The route passes Brighton Hippodrome, the Bandstand, West Pier, The Grand Brighton, Old Ship Hotel, Brighton Town Hall, Brighton Dome and the Royal Pavilion, then continues along the seafront past Old Steine, Sea Life Brighton, Volk's Electric Railway, Brighton Palace Pier and the Fishing Museum before ending at the beach. Brighton's version is shaped by the people who kept the resort running: the men who built and serviced the trains, the servants and cooks behind the Pavilion walls, the performers and staff behind the theatres and hotels, and the fishermen who landed mackerel by capstan and sold it on the shingle. Walk slowly and let the city be heard as well as seen.
