A self-guided audio tour of Guildford, exploring the wool trade, cathedral keepers, locksmiths and the workers along the Wey.

Follow a self-guided audio route through Guildford’s High Street, riverside and wharfside streets with headphones, using the app at your own pace. The walk has 10 stops and takes about 1 hour of audio, or around 2 hours in total including walking.

It begins at St Mary’s Church in Quarry Street and ends at Dapdune Wharf on Wharf Road. Along the way, the listening focuses on the practical work that kept the town going: the mill-wright’s wheel at Town Mills, the castle keeper’s keys at Guildford Castle, the cloth-racker’s arms at Millmead, the clockmaker’s bargain at the Guildhall, the lawyer-mayor’s timber staircase at Guildford House, the almshouse brothers in blue gowns at Abbot’s Hospital, the schoolmaster’s chained books at the Royal Grammar School, and the brewer’s copper vessels and barge builders’ shed by the Wey. It is a route through Guildford’s ordinary labour, trade and civic power, told through the places where those lives left traces.
