A self-guided audio tour of Kingston upon Hull, exploring the trawlermen, dockers, fish-house workers and bargees of the Humber port.

Follow a self-guided audio route with headphones and the app as you walk 10 stops through Kingston upon Hull, starting at Hull Minster and ending by Humber Dock Marina.

The tour runs for about 1 hour of audio, or around 2 hours in total with walking. It begins in the streets between the Minster, the river and the old docklands, where the city’s labour is still legible in stone, brick and water. This Hull version of the theme focuses on the people usually left out of the story: the medieval bricklayers who built Hull Minster course by course, the men of Trinity House who founded almshouses for wrecked and widowed seafarers, the whaling captains whose Arctic log-books fed science, the trawlermen’s wives who fought on the dockside for safer working, the dock labourers who moved the city’s trade by hand, and William Wilberforce, born into a merchant house but remembered here for the long work of abolition.

The route passes places tied to each thread, including Hull Maritime Museum, Hull Trinity House, Land of Green Ginger, the Old White Harte, Blaydes House, Wilberforce House, Maister House and the Wilberforce Monument in Queen’s Gardens.
