AudaTours Oxford Audio Tour: Behind the Gown
Folly Bridge, Oxford OX1, UK, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX1 4LB
Follow a self-guided route with headphones and the app as you walk through Oxford’s working streets and listen to the town behind the colleges. Starting at Folly Bridge, the tour runs to Oxford Castle in 17 stops, with about 2 hours of audio and around 3 hours in total including the walk. It passes Salter's Steamers, Alice's Shop, the Town Hall, The Bear, the Covered Market, Carfax, Hythe Bridge, St Michael at the North Gate, Blackwell Bookshop and Morris Garage, tying together boatyards, an ostler’s room, prison gatehouse, brewery yard, wharf, canal basin, market stall, marmalade kitchen, shoemaker’s bench and bicycle shed. Oxford here is not just spires and quads: it is the place where barges were built and hauled, goods were sold and stored, beer was brewed, books were issued, shoes were mended and cars began in a stable on Longwall. The route brings forward the names and workplaces that fed, clothed, printed, shod, brewed and ferried the gown, often in buildings and streets that still stand today.
