Awe-Inspiring Architecture
Starts from Manor Farm Court car park, Off Old Wolverton Road, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK12 5NN
The Floodplain Forest Nature Reserve spans 48 hectares and lies next to the River Ouse in Milton Keynes. It’s history dates back as far as Norman times, with buildings including a Motte and Bailey Castle, a medieval monastic grange and a medieval village. Our walk will take us across this Scheduled Ancient Monument site where we will be able to see remains of the earthworks.
More recently in 1811, the worlds first wide canal cast iron trough aqueduct was built across the Ouse. Refurbished in 2011, we will be able to walk along the top and admire fantastic views across the nature reserve.
Having been used as pasture for many centuries, part of the land was quarried for sand and gravel between 2007 and 2014. The quarry now acts as a wetland habitat with lakes and channels designed to fill up quickly with floodwater when the Great River Ouse floods.
We will be able to walk along and maybe stop at one of the birdhides, perhaps spotting a kingfisher or other wetland birds.

We will mostly keep to the paths. Some of the walk involves steep steps, going through livestock gates and potentially walking through fields with cows or sheep. Any dogs must be kept on a lead.
