Aycliffe Bus Museum

Discover the story of bus travel in the North East at Aycliffe Bus Museum, home to a unique collection of preserved buses and transport heritage. Explore beautifully restored vehicles, many of which you can step aboard, and browse fascinating displays of uniforms, tickets, photographs, destination blinds, signs, models and other memorabilia that capture the history of local public transport.

Our friendly volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to share the stories behind the collection and explain how these historic vehicles are preserved for future generations. You'll also have the opportunity to see our workshop and learn more about the restoration work that keeps these classics on the road.

As part of Heritage Open Days, admission is free, and visitors can also enjoy free heritage bus rides (subject to vehicle availability), offering a nostalgic journey aboard a vintage bus. Our museum shop will be open, selling transport-themed gifts, books, models and souvenirs, with every purchase helping to support the museum and its preservation work.

Whether you're passionate about transport, interested in local history, or simply looking for a great family day out, Aycliffe Bus Museum offers something for all ages. Come along and experience a piece of the North East's transport heritage in a friendly and welcoming setting.

Directions:

Aycliffe Bus Museum is located at Langton Business Centre, Burtree Road, Newton Aycliffe, and is easy to reach from the main roads around the town. Visitors can use the map on our website to plan their journey and find us easily. The museum has around 40 parking spaces on site, although these can fill quickly on busy days. Additional parking may be available on nearby streets, but please park considerately and avoid blocking junctions, entrances or local businesses. The museum is also accessible by public transport. Arriva Service 5 passes the bottom of Burtree Road, while Services 7 and 8 stop near the Greggs and Ramsay’s Garage area on St Cuthbert’s Way, just a short walk away. The museum building is wheelchair accessible, although some historic buses may not be due to their age and design. Visitors with specific accessibility requirements are welcome to contact us before visiting.

The museum building itself is wheelchair accessible, although some historic buses understandably cannot offer wheelchair access due to their age. Visitors with accessibility needs are encouraged to get in touch beforehand if they have specific questions.

Aycliffe Bus Museum, operated by the Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society, preserves the rich public transport heritage of North East England. Founded by passionate enthusiasts, the Society became a registered charity in 1982 and an Arts Council England Accredited Museum in 2012. Today, the museum houses seven historic vehicles, including buses, a coach and a unique tow truck, alongside an extensive collection of photographs, timetables, uniforms and memorabilia. Relocated to Langton Business Centre in 2021, the museum now offers workshops, exhibitions, events and heritage bus rides.
