Bailiffgate Hotel – an old school transformed
Commissioner’s Bar at Bailiffgate Hotel, 2-8 Bailiffgate, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 1LX
Today, Bailiffgate Hotel is a key new part of the world of work in Alnwick, having opened in summer 2025 as a luxury escape for visitors to the town, with a restaurant and bar also open for locals to enjoy. Its historic building, created in the 18th century as a commissioner’s house for the Duke of Northumberland’s Estate, was for decades in the 20th century a school. Generations of Duchess’ School students learned in classrooms now transformed by Bailiffgate Hotel, and many lifelong memories were made in this historic building.
This Heritage Open Day, we are delighted to welcome former students (or teachers!) back to Bailiffgate. Join us in the Commissioner’s Bar, where a special display created for the event will tell the story of the building, from its days as a school to its restoration and opening as a hotel. Enjoy discounted refreshments as you share memories of schooldays at Bailiffgate, with exclusive opportunities to view former classrooms in their new form of Georgian hotel suites throughout the day.
