Battle of the Architects at Sheffield General Cemetery

The Samuel Worth Chapel, Sheffield General Cemetery, Cemetery Avenue, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S11 8NT

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Explore Sheffield General Cemetery's bold Victorian architecture through a programme of architecturally-themed exhibitions, guided tours, talks, and children’s craft activities.

This year, as part of Heritage Open Days’ theme of architecture, we’re inviting visitors to explore the rich and contrasting styles that shape Sheffield General Cemetery.

Discover the story behind the Cemetery’s unique built environment, from Samuel Worth’s bold Egyptian-inspired gateway to William Flockton’s elegant neo-gothic additions. Outdoor exhibition boards and an indoor display in the Samuel Worth Chapel will explore how these two architectural approaches reflect changing tastes in design, belief, and commemoration during the 19th century.

Join an architectural tour, explore listed monuments and structures, and enjoy creative activities for children, all for FREE in the peaceful surroundings of this Grade II* listed Victorian garden cemetery.
