Berwick Parish Churchyard Guided Walk : Myths and Legends of Trees

Until the opening of the Civic Cemetery in 1856, this was Berwick's only burial ground which was used by all denominations. As well as its many gravestones, there is a great variety of trees. This walk explores the myths, legends and superstitions of trees, from pre Christain times to the modern era, using examples living in the churchyard. Amongst others, we will explore myths surrounding the Glastonbury thorn, millennium yew, holly, birch and rowan. Does holly ward off evil fairies? What is the association between a yew, a saint and a sheep?

Disabled parking is in the public carpark beside the building. The walk is mainly on the path.

The Church is open throughout Heritage Open Days weekend (11 - 20 September). Over the weekend (18 - 20) , there will be a short introductory talk in the Parish Church - See separate entries for timings. Other churches are also open nearby during the HODS period
