Beverley and East Riding Golf Club and anti mill
Anti Mill, Westwood, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8RG
Beverley & East Riding Golf Club was formed in 1889 and is the oldest inland golf club in Yorkshire.
The club is based on the glorious Beverley Westwood pasture land, famous for its cows, racecourse and landmark Black Mill and Anti Mill, which our traditional style clubhouse is built around. The 18 hole course enjoys outstanding views of the town and surrounding countryside from many vantage points. The first recorded meeting of the golf club was held on 23 October 1889 at the Holderness Hotel, Toll Gavel, Beverley.
The mill was originally known as ‘Baitson’s Mill’ after local residents formed a cooperative society to break away from the Union Mill (Black Mill). The current Anti-Mill was built in 1802 by Joseph Baitson to replace the previous wooden mill and it was one of five working mills on the common at that time.
When James Thirsk ceased his milling operation in 1897 the mill was dismantled and shortened. The Pasture Masters agreed an annual rent of £10 with the golf club – the lease to run annually from 1 June 1906. The golf club moved into its present headquarters in December 1906. The club is also the home of the East Riding Golf Union.
The Marne clock, built by GJF Newey of York, which stands proudly on the mill was relocated from the York Road racing stables in 1919. The clock was professionally restored by local resident Mr Bert Best in 1999.
