One of the greatest Gothic buildings in the country, there's always something new to find at the Minster.

The Minster is Beverley’s most striking medieval building. In 2021 we celebrated 1300 years of this great Grade I listed church, often compared to Westminster Abbey. The roots of Beverley Minster go back to the 8th century when John, Bishop of York, founded a monastery for the worship of God. Monasteries also provided shelter for travellers, care for the poor and elderly, and education for boys.

John died in 721 and was buried in his church. He was canonised in 1037 because of the miracles attributed to him during and after his lifetime. He became the patron saint of the deaf and dumb because he cured a young man who could neither hear nor speak.

Beverley was granted rights of sanctuary and this is the subject of an exhibition which you can view in the north transept.

This year we are running tours on two specialist aspects of the Minster: the 18th century restoration and the various contributions made by the Friends of the Minster. Both tours will offer new perspectives on the building we see today.
