Beyond Haigh Hall - The Estate and Its People
Real Crafty, 9 Upper Dicconson Street, Wigan, Greater Manchester, WN1 2AD
This launch event introduces a major new research project focused on the people who worked at Haigh Hall and across the wider estate. Visitors will hear how the project began, what kinds of records are being used, and what the first discoveries are already revealing about everyday working life at Haigh.
Research so far is uncovering a wide range of roles, from cooks, maids, housekeepers and butlers to gardeners, gamekeepers, grooms, dairymaids, clerks, bookkeepers, land agents, stewards, teachers, clergy, tenants and tradespeople. Some individuals emerge as full life stories through family papers, photographs and archives. Others appear only briefly in census returns, directories, wage books and registers, but each helps build a fuller picture of the estate and the people who sustained it.
The event will also show how local people have helped shape the project by sharing names, documents, photographs and memories, often opening up entirely new lines of enquiry. Visitors will be invited to contribute their own family history and recollections, helping to uncover a side of Haigh’s past that has too often remained in the background.
It promises to be a fascinating introduction to a different side of Haigh Hall’s history, shifting the focus from the Hall itself to the many working lives that supported it across generations.
